i have herd that they mature at 2 to 3 years some at 4. and that may be true ny girl chenged at 3. I think they stop growing at 2. but i'm not sure. mine stoped at 2. tootsie looked her best at 3,

  4. the average dog stops growing in height at about 12 months, but their bodies continue to develop untill they're 2 yrs. I've heard that pit bulls are slow to develop though, and can continue maturing untill about 3 yrs.

I agree with the height finishing around 12 months and the body by 2 years however I've had a few friends tell me (also pit bull owners) that filling out and some head growing (not the brains unfortunately ) continued to 3 years in their experience. Note that these are all shelter/rescue dogs so their breeding is completely unknown.

    Sexually mature around 6 months

    Height usually around 11-12 months

At 16 months they are about done

can still fill in a bit between the 16 and 36 month range

    best answer goes to DD...

my answer is it depends LMAO!

Genetics plays the biggest roles. Some lines (such as the Colby line) are known for maturing late at 3-4 years. Normally at about two, but again physical, sexualy, and mental maturation have different time lines so, just like in all living beings,

    it depends!

Speaking of growth, I took my 16 month old pitbull to the vet today for his shots. I was told that he's too heavy (52 pounds) and that I should only be feeding him one measuring cup of weight management dry food a day. Does that sound right?

    What are you feeding?

Dry? Are you just following the package directions? I have heard that the package does tell you to give more than they really need. How much excersise does he get? Can you feel his ribs with light pressure?

To be honest I don't know what a dog that age "should weigh", I would think it would depend on the build of the dog. However, IMHO I would give him a good quality food and more exercise before I would give a dog a weight management diet.

I have received a lot of great info from others here that shared this site with me. Might want to check out where that food comes in on the reviews.

I can feel his ribs but she (the vet) said I should actually be able to see them. Here's a pic that was taken just last week...

I think he looks fine too, I always thought if you could see them when they are just standing there that it would be too skinny.

    Cutie!!!

I thought he looked fine too. I was quite shocked to get the lecture I did. At this point I'm wondering if I should find a new vet. :(

It is hard to tell from just the one pic but it will depend on his genetics as to what "shape" he takes...then food and exercise will control the "fitness" at that shape. An APBT is "usually" going to be a bit slimmer than an AST and so on. He definitely does not look "fat" and surely looks very happy like he is...

As for the ribs, they are well sprung in the rib cage area and in a perfect world the outline of the ribs should be slightly visible at normal weight...more visible at conditioned weight...
