This is Jenny. She is a twelve week old American Staffordshire / Lab mix. At such a young age, she is extremely playful and curious. She loves other dogs, and any person who crosses her path instantly becomes her best friend. Jenny was rescued from the home of a mentally disabled man (also a convicted felon). She had been left outside without shelter. Her only food was whatever was left over after the other dog (German Shepherd/Wolf) finished. Her only water came from a broken sewer line. Both dogs were physically abused and left for days without human contact. On the morning that they were rescued, the man had gone into a rage, because the dogs had escaped the makeshift fence that he had put up for them. He could be heard blocks away screaming and yelling at the terrified dogs. He repeatedly said, "I'll kill you...you'd better run..." His next door neighbor witnessed this, along with him chasing the dogs with a shovel, beating the shepherd (after chaining him to a tree), and taking the puppy (Jenny) by the neck. She heard the puppy yelping and crying, but did not see what the man did from that point on. Not thinking that the police would get there in time and having been let down by animal control before, she took her savings ($1,000) and offered it to the demented man on the spot. He proceeded to tell her a disturbing story of how the dogs did not belong to him. They belonged to a woman whose husband had died eight months prior. The woman had become destitute and lost her home. This man was the only person who was willing to take in a huge male wolfdog. The dog was chained to a tree until the day the man tried to kill him. The puppy was given to the woman's little boy from a litter of unwanted puppies a few houses away. Unable to tell her child (who had already lost so much) "no," she gave the puppy to the care of the unstable man to be a playmate for the shepherd. The stress of caring for the two dogs pushed the man over the edge, and after several days of their breaking loose and running the streets, he snapped. I'm the woman (the next door neighbor) who saved the dogs. Since the shepherd was chained, I tried to feed him and to talk gently to him through the fence...he would get as close as he could and sleep. I cried and watched all winter while the dog nearly froze in ten below blizzard-like conditions. I called animal control, only to have them come out and leave a too small plastic crate underneath the tree where the dog was tied. I saw the puppy arrive, and for the first time, saw life in the shepherd's eyes. They became inseparable. And I witnessed the cruelty that slowly escalated with each passing day. (At one point, the man was even cussing and yelling at my own sweet, little dogs...which broke my heart). The story has a happy ending for the shepherd/wolf. He has been adopted by a gentle, loving family. For the first time in his life, he'll have his own bed and someone to love him. And little Jenny sits here, waiting for her chance to be loved. She doesn't know much, barely knows her name, and has no idea what it means to be a part of a family. But she feels love. She responds to gentleness. She's putting on much needed weight and looks so pretty. She needs a home with a patient, calm, and firm but gentle human. She has the potential to be a lifelong friend and a great family dog. But she needs a chance. She needs her own little miracle. Won't you be the one?We are located in New Mexico.
