I have two young pitbulls (both males, both neutered, the young one was neutered 10 days ago). The first one 15 months (black) and the other 8 months (brown, red nose). I've had these dogs since they were each two months old and they have grown-up together. Recently we've had some problems.

The older black one is dominant but the younger rednose continues to display aggression tendancies like wanting to walk first and not being submissive to the older one. The older one recently attacked the younger one for wanting to go first into the house and the younger suffered a deep bite to the neck. How can I stop the fighting. What kind of training can I do to stop a perhaps fatal fight? The dogs both weigh the same and it appears that the younger will eventually be alpha because he seems to be stronger willed, more aggressive and probably will be bigger when mature. I'm afraid the older one will kill the younger one or the younger will kill the older one when they become a bit older. Is it possible to resolve the alpha question without them fighting?
I know theirs a thread similar to this but that thread is asking if your dog sleeps with you. this one that i made is asking if its "appropiate" to have your dog sleep with you.. What i mean by this is..

Ok say you have a a teenage daughter.. and your a father. Would it be appropiate for the father to sleep with the daughter ? Not sure if i should be comparing a dog to a human but yea..

And a, when your dog sleeps with you, the hair gets on your bed and yea..

And also, when your dogs outside he brings the outside germs from maybe his urine that he step'd on and all that stuff.. inside your bed

And if you let your dog just to keep warm at night , you could get more blankets.

sorry about my grammar lol . hope yall can understand what im trying to say :p

p.s. i do let rex sleep with me but i am thinking about changing that..

/discuss :o

plz feel free to tell me that you disagree with my thoughts or w/e . im not sensitive/wont flip out on you lol

This is a repost from another forum

On Sunday, June 22, 2008 my 10-year old lab mix, Chai, sustained a severe injury from a product that the company Four Paws Inc, produces. The toy I'm referencing is the pimple ball with bell. (Item #20227-001, UPC Code 0 4566320227 9)

While chewing on the toy, a vacuum was created and it effectively sucked his tongue into the hole in the ball. From speaking with my vet, this likely occurred because there is not a second hole in the ball preventing the vacuum effect from happening. I became aware of this when Chai approached a friend at my home whimpering with the ball in his mouth. She tried unsuccessfully to remove the ball but the tongue had swollen and could not be released.

Chai was taken to the Animal Medical Center (an emergency care facility in New York City) and was treated by Dr. Nicole Spurlock to have the ball removed. Because the size of the opening on the ball was so small, all circulation to his tongue was cut off. The doctors had to sedate him in order to remove it. Once the ball was removed, his tongue swelled to the point that he could no longer put it in his mouth. Chai was sent home with care instructions and to be observed overnight for any changes.

By the following morning Chai’s tongue had swollen even more.

He was taken to his regular vet, Dr. Timnah Lee, for treatment. He was admitted and kept sedated for a period of three days during which time they were treating his wounds and waiting to determine how much of his tongue could be saved. On June 26, 2008 Chai had his tongue amputated.

He was kept in after-care for an additional three days. On Sunday June 29th I brought Chai home from the vet with a barrage of home care instructions, to last for an additional 7 days. His next visit was to have his mouth re-examined and have the feeding tube in his neck removed.

On the way home from the vet we stopped at Petland Discount where I purchased their product to speak to the manager on duty. Upon meeting Chai and seeing his condition, he removed all of the balls in question from the shelves. He also gave me the customer service number to their corporate headquarters to request that they refuse to continue purchasing all Four Paws products, but I have not called them as of yet.

Additionally, I shared my story with friends who have a French Bulldog named Petunia. Upon hearing my story their eyes widened. They explained that the same thing happened twice in one night with a smaller version of the same ball to their dog. Fortunately, they were able to pull it off before the tongue swelled, but not without tremendous effort and pain to the dog. They recalled how horrific it was to hear their dog screaming while they had to pry the ball from her tongue.

To date, my veterinary bills total over $5000.00 and I will have regular follow up appointments for some time. Additionally, Chai now requires a much more expensive form of food because of this injury, averaging approximately $200 per month.

Also - I am Chai’s sole caretaker and the regime required to care for him following his surgery has forced me to lose a great deal of business. I am a hair stylist and my salon is in my home. Given that Chai needs constant attention, and given that he has been wailing in pain, I have not been able to see clients.

Police said Vernest Dickson was walking her dog just after 6 a.m. Tuesday when a pit bull knocked a woman to the ground.
The pit bull was then tugging her hair and trying to drag her dog away, the woman told police.
The victim said the neighbor threw a drain pipe at the pit bull and it ran off.
Dickson was not bitten but was scratched and scraped.
The attack happened on Aspinwall Avenue on Cleveland's east side.
If you see the brown and white pit bull, call police.
By Randy M. Cauthron, Managing Editor

After lengthy discussions at two previous city council sessions, followed by a meeting with Dr. Tom Beall of Homestead Small Animal Practice, Monday night the Spencer City Council passed the final filing of an amended amendment dealing with unrestrained vicious animals in public.

The key objection to the ordinance brought before the council initially in July was the listing of breed-specific animals, rather than a more general focus. Objectors also stressed that the irresponsible owners needed to be held more accountable as opposed to just looking at the animal itself.

The Public Safety Committee met Aug. 12 to take into consideration the public comments that had been received during the first and second filings of the ordinance. It was determined that the ordinance should remain intact with the exception of removing any reference to a specific breed of dog; instead the ordinance gives a detailed definition of a "vicious animal," and also clarifies when an animal may be destroyed.

Council members for the most part agreed with the changes, at least for the time being.

"I'm going to vote for this ordinance tonight," said Ward 3 Councilman Steve Bomgaars with the anticipated "but" forthcoming. "We had a good discussion in committee with regard to omitting the breed specific; but I think we should keep a watchful eye."

Bomgaars suggested that the city continue to watch communities like Council Bluffs and Ottumwa to see how their ordinances for vicious animals are handled.

Ward 5 Councilman Ron Hanson agreed.
I'm not as convinced that some of these breeds are lap dogs," Bomgaars said, adding that if Police Chief Mark Lawson continues to report problems with these specific dog breeds, the council should come back and reconsider the decision to omit the names.

Mayor Reynold Peterson said, "One other thing that came out of the meeting is that we need to review ordinances with animals to put more liability on owners."

The new amendment passed on a 7-0 vote.

Well Bandito went from Best of Show winner to having a nasty histiocytoma on top of his poor little head.
I thought he had gotten a wood sliver in the top of his head (he was chewing a 2 x 4 Saturday) but there was nothing in there. Just this perfectly round, ulcerated sore.
He is on antibiotics and a topical steroid cream.

SACRAMENTO, CA – The American Kennel Club Board of Directors voted
unanimously this week to withdraw its opposition to legislation that
will wreak havoc on California dog owners and set a dangerous
precedent for many other states to follow.

It is urgent for all California dog owners to fax their state
senator immediately to clearly state your continued opposition to AB
1634, which is now called the "California Responsible Pet Ownership
Act," as a final Senate vote is expected on Monday, August 18.
Please let your senator know that AKC does not speak for you.

It also is urgent for dog owners in all 50 states to contact AKC
officers today and ask them to publicly renounce this legislation
prior to the Senate vote. It also is appropriate for nonresidents to
let elected officials know what this legislation will mean for
tourism, field trials, performance events and field trials.

If passed into law, this legislation will unleash a reign of terror
against California dog owners by animal rights activists. The result
could be the destruction of a lifetime labor of love for any fancier
who is accused of any violation of any law pertaining to animals.
For example, the amended legislation allows for unproven allegations
to result in the forced sterilization of every dog in a kennel after
three complaints for barking or noise.

Animal rights extremists will find it easy to destroy an entire
kennel through noise ordinances alone. It's easy to make dogs bark,
especially when their owners are not at home. All that it would take
is a phone call to complain to authorities for the civil penalties
to kick in. All of the dogs in a kennel would have to be spayed or
neutered after the third time this happens. It is a dream scenario
for animal rights fanatics.

As with previous versions of the legislation, dog owners will be
denied the right to contest civil penalties in court or to appeal
them. No provisions are contained in the legislation to require a
hearing or allow for an appeal. Civil penalties apply when a
citation is filed.

The AKC negotiated in secret with Rep. Lloyd Levine and agreed to
a "compromise" on AB 1634, which continues to be staunchly opposed
by virtually all kennel clubs and dog owners' organizations in the
state. Levine is allied with some of the most radical animal rights
groups in California, and has stated publicly that he wants to see
almost every dog and cat in the state spayed or neutered.

In cutting the deal with Levine, AKC slapped the face of every
member of its affiliated clubs in California and signaled a
willingness to work against the interests and beliefs of dog owners
nationwide.

As justification for the deal, an AKC announcement said the
legislation simply requires dog owners to follow the law and be
responsible. The American Sporting Dog Alliance rejects this
position, because current laws already address animal control
problems and mandate penalties for noncompliance. There is no reason
to make owners of intact animals into second-class citizens by
imposing a double penalty and endangering their dogs.

Perhaps the greatest error committed by AKC was to create division
and disunity in the ranks of dog owners. This is cause for
celebration among the animal rights groups, as their most successful
tactic has been to divide and conquer animal owners. AKC stumbled
into the trap they set.

Animal rights groups have targeted AKC as the weak link in dog
owners' advocacy groups, and are portraying the lumbering and
toothless giant as the voice of all dog owners. AKC has come under
sharp attack for its main function as a registry for purebred dogs,
and has shown an increasing tendency to compromise with the very
groups that want to destroy it. Animal rights groups oppose dog
breeding in any form and regard every compromise as a victory that
carries them one step closer to their long-range goal of eliminating
animals from American life.

The American Sporting Dog Alliance is asking dog owners in every
state to inform the AKC that compromising our rights of pet
ownership is not acceptable to us, and that we expect the
organization to stand with us on the frontlines of the battle
against animal rights legislation.

Contact information for state senators and AKC officers will be
provided at the bottom of this report.

AKC apparently won two concessions in the "compromise. "

The first is that Levine inserted a provision to exempt nonresidents
from the law if they can prove that their dogs are temporarily in
California for shows, events, training and other legal activities.
Prior versions of the bill would have made it unsafe to bring dogs
into the state for AKC-sanctioned events, which would have hit AKC
in the pocketbook. However, Levine also gained the assurance that
his draconian law would not hurt tourism in California, thus making
it more politically palatable to elected officials.

The "compromise" also eliminated a provision to allow anyone to make
an anonymous complaint about dog owners, which could have led to
citations and forced sterilization.

However, Levine gave up almost nothing in real terms.

Here is a summary of the key points in the current version of AB
1634:

· Any law enforcement official (police, animal control
officers, sheriffs, humane police officers, etc.) is authorized to
file citations for any offense of any existing law or municipal
ordinance pertaining to animals. These include violations of
licensing, leash, animal cruelty and excessive barking laws.

· Citations have two components. The first component is the
alleged violation of existing law, which requires proof and a guilty
plea or verdict to kick in fines or jail terms provided by existing
laws. The second component is for a civil penalty, which kicks in by
the citation itself. No proof or conviction is required for the
civil penalty to apply, and the legislation provides for no way to
challenge or appeal it.

· For dogs, the civil penalty for any citation alleging a
violation of a law is set at $50 for the first offense, $100 plus
mandatory microchipping for the second offense, and mandatory forced
sterilization for a third offense. There is no way to contest or
appeal these civil penalties. For cats, microchipping and
sterilization are mandated for the second offense.

· The legislation also is rife with ambiguity, which would
allow each law enforcement officer, magistrate and judge wide
latitude to interpret the law. One ambiguous part of the legislation
could be interpreted to make the ownership of an intact dog that is
found to be roaming at large a violation of the law. It says: "A
person who owns or possesses within the state any intact dog that is
properly licensed, as required by law, but whose dog is at large may
be cited, and, if cited, shall pay a civil penalty as provided in
this section." A literal reading of that sentence allows people to
be cited for the ownership of an intact dog regardless of the
circumstances. A dog may escape confinement for purely accidental
reasons such as a mail carrier forgetting to close a gate, or a
young child opening a door.

· We expect hunting and field trial dogs to be at the greatest
risk. In theory, it is possible to a hunting or field trial dog that
gets lost to be cited three times for a single occurrence. It could
be cited for roaming at large, not wearing a collar and license tag
(animal rights extremist will stalk field trials and public hunting
areas to remove tags and collars), and for animal cruelty if the dog
is overheated, appears tired or appears thin because of athletic
conditioning.

· The civil penalties would apply to any intact dog that is
not licensed or improperly licensed, which could mean a licensed dog
that slips a collar, or is not wearing a collar and tag at home or
at a dog show or field trial.

· Those two provisions make dog owners especially vulnerable
to tactics used by some animal rights extremists, who often kidnap
dogs and take them to shelters, turn dogs loose and call animal
control officers, or remove the collars and license tags from dogs.
Hunting dogs have been targeted most often by these tactics.

· And the only exemptions for waiving microchipping or
sterilization mandates are a signed statement from a veterinarian
saying that it would endanger the dog's health.
What You Can Do

Please telephone or FAX your California state senator. Let your
senator know that you oppose AB 1634 in its current form, and that
AKC does not represent you on this legislation. Here is a list of
each senator's fax number (courtesy of Cat Fanciers of America).
Because the vote could come early Monday, Faxes are the most
reliable means of communication. Phone calls are a second choice.
IN OUR VIEW: Daily Herald

Note to cities: Sic 'em

Several more area cities are considering new regulations for pit bulls, and none too soon.

In Orem, two men were attacked by three dogs, including a pit bull, in late July. Yes, two other dogs were involved, but it was the pit bull that did the biting, according to reports.

Certainly any dog can attack, but when a pit bull is the attacker, the risk of severe injury or even death goes way up. They (and a couple of other breeds) are more dangerous than average canines.

South Jordan bans them.

Springville has such tight restrictions that that city has only one resident with a pit bull permit. (One might wonder how many pit bulls are actually in Springville. Maybe the ordinance is so tough that people don't even try to comply with it.)

Mapleton is pondering an even more restrictive ordinance.

Orem is looking at several ideas, but nothing is definite yet.

The Provo Municipal Council has been working on a more nuanced measure that would target "at-risk" or "dangerous" dogs.

But what's so bad about "breed-specific" laws? Dogs are not human beings, they are animals. Pit bulls, rottweilers and a few other kinds are bred for aggression. And so it is responsible to subject them to tighter control because of who they are. Unlike the targeting of a racial group for humans, this isn't about constitutional rights or discrimination. It's about public safety.

Animal control has been a hot topic for the city in recent months, and the item will be on the agenda once again at the council's workshop today.

Members of the Killeen City Council are scheduled for a busy day as three committees are scheduled to meet throughout today in addition to the 5 p.m. council workshop.

The city's animal control ordinance is on the agenda, and Councilman Larry Cole said the city is anxiously looking for a workable solution.

"The vicious dogs – we've got to find a solution to that," Cole said Monday. "We're getting weekly complaints from citizens that they can't walk their neighborhood without getting accosted by some large dog. We have to find a way to make the owners more accountable. "

Cole said no particular neighborhood or section of the city has been overwhelmed more than any other, but the Manor and Killeen Creek subdivisions have certainly had problems.

"I cover the city on a regular basis, and they're all over town," Cole said. "You're supposed to keep your animals in your yard. Some backyards don't even have a gate. The first time out shouldn't be the time they attack a child."
